Jeffrey Lewis & The Voltage is the latest incarnation of indie-rock songwriter Jeffrey Lewis. Called “bizarre but brilliant” by Uncut and “weird… but also downright inspiring” by Rolling Stone, Jeffrey began recording homemade cassettes at home in New York City in 1998, eventually releasing seven albums on Rough Trade Records (label of the Smiths, the Strokes, Belle & Sebastian, etc.), as well as releasing albums on labels like Don Giovanni, K Records and Moshi Moshi.Lewis and his bandmates have toured regularly for years, performing an idiosyncratic blend of garage rock and contemplative folk, developing a devoted following from Los Angeles to London, Melbourne to Moscow, Chicago to Shanghai and beyond, a career that has also sometimes included sharing bills and tours with The Vaselines, The Fall, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, The Mountain Goats, Daniel Johnston, Pulp and other luminaries. Jeffrey is also a comic book writer/artist and includes his own illustrations and projections in concert to accompany certain songs (historical pieces like “The History of Communism” or fantastical works like ”The Creeping Brain”). Jeffrey has self-published thirteen issues of his comic book series Fuff, and Jeffrey’s writing, illustrations, comic books and music have been featured by NPR, The History Channel, The New York Times and other worldwide media outlets great and small. In 2011 the Webby Awards presented History.com with an award for “Best Writing on the Internet” for the Jeffrey Lewis piece “The Story of Sitting Bull.” The album “Jeffrey Lewis & The Voltage: Bad Wiring” was released in Nov 2019. Recorded in Nashville by producer Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Sleater-Kinney, Lou Reed), many reviews are calling it the best Jeffrey Lewis album to date.PRAISE:”Hands down my favorite contemporary songwriter” – Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie)“Jeffrey is the best pure songwriter I know of… ‘Sad Screaming Old Man’… is one of my favorite songs ever written” – David Berman (Silver Jews)
